I am going out today to Fry's to pick up a new CPU fan for my QuadCore Q6600. I will be overclocking so I would like to know what someone could recommend.

So far here is what i'm thinking about getting:

1) ThermalTake - DUOrb
2) ThermalTake - Blue Orb II
3) Zalman - CNPS8700NT
4) Zalman- CNPS9700NT Universal

Anyone use any of these on a QuadCore?

I have not personally used it, but in my reading the DuOrb is the present king of air-cooling quads. I use the second-best ThermalTake V1 on my Core2Duo. One deciding factor against the Zalman 9700 (which I have also used, before the V-1) is that you have to remove the motherboard to install it, a real pain. The ThermalTakes use the standard Intel clips which, if installed correctly, make it much easier to attach & remove the cooler.

All these coolers are BIG, make sure you have room in your case/mobo. I had no problems with the V-1 or 9700 on my Asus P5W-DH. Most enthusiast boards can accommodate oversize coolers.

At work we use these two, for Quad core AMD Opterons (2356)

ZEROtherm ZEN FZ120 120mm CPU Cooler

ZEROtherm BTF90 92mm Silent UFO CPU Cooler

(I use the BTF90 on my home rig aswell, quiet and the temp of my Core2Duo never goes above 50 degrees Celsius, even under FULL Load (Burn-in Test))

and as Tony mentioned, these take a back plate and have screw mounts, but installation is a breeze...

Well when i went out to Frys i was walking back and forth picking up many heatsinks and trying to decide. I was locked in with the Zalman - CNPS8700NT but i figured i would spend 10$ more and just get the DuOrb. Picked it up for 70$ the most i have every spent on a heatsink/fan system..So i guess I will see and hope for the best with this guy. Thanks for the info!

You won't be disappointed.

Ben, not that *&^$% butterfly! I bought one back when they were marketed as "silent fanless" coolers...I installed it and watched the temps climb past 50c and that was that...sold on eBay for a few bucks. There was a gaudy plastic shiny butterfly screwed to the top that I removed before I did anything (it had no function). It seems it's been replaced with an "alien head" or some other klickie-buntie thing...[smile]

Tony,

that is the fanless one, and I agree it s*ck*d, the one I am using is the Butterfly with wings (FAN) besides the difference in that it uses a fan, it also has a higher surface area (higher count of lamellas)... works like a charm, plus it is quieter than the NorthQ I used previously (build just like the Zalman CNPS8700NT)...
