I just started a new job, and the version of Query Analyzer they have appears to not have the object browser. They use Enterprise Manager to see what's what. Arrgh. Is it true that there is an edition out there without the OB? Can one install it, or is there a secret handshake that will bring it to life.
Thanks

If you're using SQL 2000, then just next to the drop down list of databases in QA, theres the object browser button (a box with objects coming out of it. Hover over it and you should see the description.

You can press F8 to toggle the visibility of the object browser.

Or go to Tools -> ObjectBrowser -> Show/Hide if you can't remember F keys. @=)

Yeah, I did try all those things. F8 doesn't work. There is no tools menu. This thing is old and brain dead!

What version of SQL are you using? Do a "SELECT @@VERSION". Without the double quotes of course.

If it's just EM on your local machine as opposed to the server you might want to unistall and reinstall the client tools.

If I recall correctly, the version of Query Analyzer that shipped with SQL Server 7 did not have an object browser.

You could try downloading the evaluation version of sql 2000 and installing ONLY the client tools. You can use Query Analyzer (from the 2000 version) to connect to a sql 7 database.

George,

I was wondering about that. That's why I asked him what version he was using. Thanks for clarifying.

Catadmin,

It was actually your request for additional information that caused me to think about the 'version 7' version of query analyzer.

GMMASTROS -- Thanks for the clarification between SQL Server 7 and 2000 -- clearly what I need are the 2000 tools. The link you provided allows downloads of the entire SQL 2000 package, which is very bulky. Is there anywhere one can (still) get the Query Analyzer tool by itself, or will I need to look to 3rd parties?
Thanks

David

Query Analyzer doesn't come by itself. The client tools for 2000 include Enterprise Manager & Books Online, but they are only installable from the actual SQL Server install package. You can install them by themselves, you just need the entire SQL Server 2000 install to get them.

And, as far as I know, there are no 3rd party tools that actually replace EM & QA, though there are 3rd party tools that do mimic the look of the interfaces.
