Hi

I have two sites, Uk and US and we are connected by a MPLS VPN.

We have a exchange 2003 servers in each site in the same org connected via a SMTP connector so all internal mail uses the MPLS.

When travelling to for example the US my mailbox is in the UK and working online with Outlook is painfully slow

Our MPLS is 4.5mb in each direction wih QOS provided by the providor and managed by us. I would like to use the QOS to enable better / faster communicaton but now sure where to start, any tips ? experience people could share ?

Many Thanks

Dave

maybe QOS would not work...have you looked at WAN optimization? that may be a better fit

What QOS policy is being supported by your provider? You have to see what policies they are using and tag traffic accordingly.

Thanks for the Quick answers.

I have the details of the QOS profiling and have applied other trafifc accordingley i.e Video Conference , Double Take etc but wasnt sure really what protocols I needed to match, i.e SMTP, Exchange RPC

For general SMTP traffic is left in COS4 (default) which gets 10% of the avaialble bandwidth etc but its Outlook connecting to exchange from remote I would like to place in a higher policy.

The simple solution with no reconfiguration necessary on your network equipment is to configure your outlook client to cache your mail store.

Thanks for the reply, I did think that but using QOS there must be a way of applying a polic for this

Thanks for all the input

Dave

It's not a matter of QOS exactly, its a matter of bandwidth. If your mailbox is 900mb for example its going to take quite a while to pull it down at 4 mb. Thus if you cache your email on your laptop you only sync changes.

If you wanted to implement COS you would need a policy map that matches the traffic via IP for example and then tags it.

Thanks for the feedback, I totally agree and see your point. I think to chache os the way forward

Cheers
