Greetings all - I have a question I think I know the answer to but I need confirmation OR I need to be wrong!

If I have a video conference system in NY and one in CA and they use the public internet to video conference back and forth, does it do ANY good to have QoS set up on the router in NY and CA?

Thanks in advance for any input!

the only thing you gain by setting up qos on your devices is determining which traffic is placed in the output queue of the interface and in which order. once it goes on to the next hop it will be treated as best-effor traffic.

we have a similar situation between our NY and TN offices, we found that creating an IPSEC tunnel across the internet between the two buildings helped out significantly. having as much success as we did we increased the bandwidth at each site and turned off our T-1 point-to-point lines, now we send all voice and data across the tunnel.

I wouldn't normally suggest voice over an IPSec tunnel, for the reasons above regarding QoS over the Internet. It's definitely possible to do, though if you want a guarantee on data rates and QoS you'd need an alternate WAN solution from a service provider. I would view it as more of a last resort.
