With the move away from Windows servers I'd thought'd I'd try the Application server (11.0.4.1.0 11) as a virtual machine on the NAS using QNAP Virtualization Station.

Although it supports VMware the .ova did not work so I downloaded the .iso to the NAS and went from there. I chose a 4 core CPU, 4gb RAm, 30gb HDD and Centos 6.1 but these can be adjusted as needed. Do check the total RAM on the NAS as some models are quite limited.

So far so good and it has a console and snapshots.

Guess it's just a test if you could run it on a QNAP.

It doesn't seem to be much cheaper than buying a miniserver tho, which would be a supported solution.

Does there have to be? It an interesting option.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Derfloh, this is meant to be an answer - of sorts.

I can see that this might work in a very small set up where the NAS is a multiple purpose device but for anything else a dedicated server would be needed.

Many NAS models have quite low CPU and RAM specs and the higher spec ones aren't cheap.
