QMAILQUEUE patch

Howdy all.

I'm having trouble for some time now getting qmail-scanner to be happy with my FreeBSD 5.1 install. I have Qmail 1.03 running like a champ, SpamAssassin and Maildrop are installed, and I'm getting mail. So far, so good.

The problem is spam. More spam than messages. Not good. Another party posted an address at my domain on a web site. Nothing I can do, I'm harvested now. I get legitimate email sent to that address also, so I can't just forward it to a bit bucket.

Here's the thing. I've tried to patch Qmail with the QMAILQUEUE patch a few times. Each time, qmail-scanner says that Qmail is not patched and won't install qmail-scanner-queue.pl.

I don't have/don't want vpopmail, else I'd have gone with the instructions at qmailrocks.org. This is just a simple install for one domain that I own.

Has anyone had much luck with patching Qmail? If so, help, since I've already wasted too much time on trying to cure this spam problem.

TIA,

thedaver,

Sorry about the vpopmail bit there, but it was late. I had tried patch -p1 < ../qmailqueue-patch from your instructions and then make WITH_QMAILQUEUE_PATCH=yes, but for some reason qmail-scanner still doesn't find evidence of the patch.

Am I missing something?

Wishdiak,
The credit for the instructions belongs to Michael Bowe.
The patch for qmailqueue should work properly and then you complete the instructions for the qmail make setup check.

I don't understand your reference to WITH_QMAILQUEUE_PATCH.

thedaver,

Ah, so maybe that's it. I've been installing from FreeBSD 5.1 ports. I usually go to /usr/ports/mail/qmail/work/qmail-1.03 and apply the patch there, then cd ../../ && make. From /usr/ports/mail/qmail it doesn't understand make setup check, but I could try it in /usr/ports/mail/qmail/work/qmail-1.03.

Then it should be a simple matter of qmailctl restart, correct?

I haven't the slightest clue how to accomodate the ports on *BSD. If you are building on a Linux variant you would stay in "../qmail-1.03" and both apply the patch and to "make setup check" etc.... Again, my BSD experience is zero, but I am aware of the difference in methodology. You may need to google for some BSD specific help.

thedaver,

Right. I did try to patch the source files in /usr/ports/mail/qmail/work/qmail-1.03 which I believe is the equivalent. I got no errors with 'patch -p1 < /path/to/patch'. Then 'make setup check' gave no errors, but qmail-scanner still doesn't find evidence of QMAILQUEUE and refuses to install.

I've tried Googling it, I think I'll go ask in the FreeBSD forum. Thanks for your help.

thedaver,

That's the installed path on my box as well. Thanks for your help, I'll ask in the FreeBSD forum to see if anyone has any OS-specific insight.
