I would like to replace my sendmail with Qmail on my Redhat 6.1 machine... but am very new to Qmail.

Would anyone know where I could possibly find step by step installation instructions for QMail? - and I don't mean... go to qmail.org.

I really would like to find "step by step", "line for line" - HELP!

Thanks!

try not!
OK, I'm not going to send you to qmail.org, but I will send you to <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> on the "Life with qmail" section. This will give you what you want. I've recently been using this to set up a new qmail installation, and it had me up and running in no time.

--
AndyBo!

Thanks again for your help. I'll be sure to print out the pages and read up!

One thing though...
I use a tremendous amount of aliases (/etc/aliases) for sendmail.
i.e. sending an email to one address actually goes to about 5000 people.

Does QMail use the aliases file like sendmail does? If not, what would you recommend a newbie like me do about getting this to work with QMail? I apologize in advance if this information can be found on the page you already pointed me to (I will start reading it as soon as I'm sone typing here)
But if it's not... can you point me to another cool page to read up on?

Thanks AndyBo!

try not!
Ok. After reading through and attempting the follow the instructions on the <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> documentation... I have successfully installed qmail.

The documentation was very clear to understand until I got to the part on how to incorporate your existing /etc/aliases file with qmail using fastforward.
Here is what I found:
"Most sendmail users will be familiar with /etc/aliases. djb's fastforward package supports everything sendmail supports in /etc/aliases, plus more.

To activate /etc/aliases, put the following in /var/qmail/alias/.qmail-default:

¦ fastforward -d /etc/aliases.cdb

The confusion comes in where... The /etc/aliases/cdb file never existed... So I manually created it. But this is what I got when I tried to test it:

[root@host fastforward-0.51]# env DEFAULT=postmaster HOST=domain.com fastforward -nd /etc/aliases.cdb
fastforward: fatal: unable to read /etc/aliases.cdb: input/output error

I am realizing how crippled my emailing system will be without having the /etc/aliases file to work with qmail.

Can anyone please shed some light on this topic for me. I would really like to get this working!

Thanks in advance for you help!

try not!
do... or do not. there is no try!

Mike's right, but if you got the fastforward package from <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> then you should have compiled up a program called "newaliases" as part of "fastforward". This is a bit of a wrapper around cdb that looks for /etc/aliases and sets things up for qmail.

If newaliases doesn't seem to be working, check that you've not got sendmail still installed. sendmail also has a utility called "newaliases" that creates the DB aliases database.

--
