Hallo All,

Quick question. I have a standard qmail/vpopmail setup. If I have a .qmail-bounce in /home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain conataining:

|/var/qmail/bin/bouncesaying "Sorry - it is not going to work!"

I get a proper bounce when sending a mail to bounce@mydomain.com

Now, if I put the exact same in .qmail-default, I was under the impression that all mails sent to non existing users would get a bounce as well - but this dows not seem to work. Any ideas as to why?

Currently my .qmail-default contains:

| /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' /home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain/myself

but this gets bombarded...

...never mind, solved it with

##| /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox

Does anybody know if you van edit the bounce messages that get created. I now get something like:

Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. vpopmail (#5.1.1)

I would like to remove the last part (vpopmail) as I think it might confuse some people...

BIS,
My personal preference is to NOT send anything out on bounce messages. This is based upon a few years of finding out that legitimate users use telephone/voicemail to verify if important email reached a destination, and their typical use of an address book to originate the sender.

Spammers, on the other hand, will send dictionary attacks without end and your qmail queue fills up with responses that can't be delivered.

I have been delivering ALL of my bounces (not found, mailbox full, virus found) to /dev/null. Not a peep from the users against it.

Perhaps this is a personal style choice, but it keeps the load down on your server and makes tracking "real" email far easier, IMHO.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
I guess its time for one of those great debates with management... ;-)
