qmail broken under suse linux 8.2 pro

I've been running qmail successfully under suse linux 6.x and 7.0 but when I 'had' to upgrade to vers 8.2, qmail no longer receives email. Everything installs as before except when I start qmail (and if I try the 3rd test in the instructions TEST.deliver: echo to: me |
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject) I get nothing whatsoever in the /var/log/mail logfile... but the test email does get delivered to the Maildir. However, no emails from the outside get delivered.

I have already removed postfix and recomplied qmail.

Any thoughts???

uid, gid conflict?

/var/log/qmail/ priviledges?

default firewall blocking port 25?
