I ran 'qmailctl stat' on our freshly installed qmail server at work. I found that there were 36 messages in the outbound queue. However, it appears none of those emails were addressed to any users on any of our domains. What am I missing? Why would qmail accept these messages, and then stick 'em in outbound? It didn't seem to affect email flow, but it is a concern nontheless!

Outbound queue is email to "everybody else" that is originating from your system/users. That they are in the queue says that the system is probably having trouble delivering the messages.

More often than not these are bounce/double-bounce messages from your system to the believed recipient as a result of spam.

These messages have a lifetime that you'e set within /var/qmail/control/queuelifetime and will expire without further effort.

If, however, you notice that a bunch of these are to a legitimate user/domain combo that you know of, you might want to check your logs and give that admin a call. Perhaps his/her SMTP is down, thus messages are piling up in your queue to reach them.

Only problem is we do not use our qmail server for SMTP Relay. I have a Win 2k machine configured for SMTP relay, and all our users are configured to use that server (It uses an alternate port as well as user authentication). Simply put, our qmail server only deliver's mail to local domains. And also, if 36 messages were not making it, I would've gotten a call from someone. But everyone says their mail was going back and forth just fine.

Bounces and doublebounces to (unreachable/invalid) spam domains/users will not show up under your arrangement.

Scrutinize the destinations in queue via "qmailctl queue"
