Hi,
the qdaemon dies several times a day -

errpt has

SYMPTOM CODE
31
SOFTWARE ERROR CODE
-9017
ERROR CODE
0
DETECTING MODULE
'srchevn.c'@line:'350'
FAILING MODULE
qdaemon

always the same line and module, but IBM can only
suggest rml's. I want to figure out why....
Usually happens early AM when the backups are running,
so maybe not getting a resource in time ?

Years ago this used to be a fairly common problem, but it happens less with newer AIX versions.
The first thing I would look for is corruption in the /etc/qconfig file. Any 'dummy' queue devices, or missing tabs (hand edited /etc/qconfig is notorious).
Not sure how many queues you have.
Another thing that I've seen cause problems is extrainious files in /var/spool/lpd/qdir.
You can monitor your system and see if it corresponds to high paging rate or low memory.
Look in the error log for clues.
Turn on debug in /etc/syslog.conf and make sure to refresh syslogd then see if this tells you anything.
