Windows 98 workstations, printing over a Novell network to a Lexmark printer.

Instructor insists on using QBasic to teach beginning programming. QBasic is set up on individual workstations hard drives. Shortcut is set up to launch software. We can manipulate the program fine until we try to print. When we try to print we get a "device timed out" error.

I have reinstalled the network printer responding "yes" to will the computer print DOS based programs. I look a the printer and the print job is not even making it into the Windows 98 printer queue. If it at least hit the Queue within Windows I could find a way to flush it to the network printer. Any one have any suggestions?

Is the printer set up as LPT1 on the workstations?

Printer is set up as Lpt1 which is captured to the network. The print job in the printer window is captured to the network printer. However, it is not making the trip from the DOS based app to the windows printer queue.

Unusual. One more question I should have asked before...

Are any other DOS based apps having problems using that printer? Answers of "all" or "none" should help clarify the nature of the problem. An answer of "some" might only confuse the issue.

I don't believe the problem is directly related to Qbasic. Have you tried printing to another printer on the network?

Sorry about all the questions.

This is the only DOS app on the system. Everything else is Windows based. Have tried to print to another printer on LAN and failed. That is what prompted me to check to see if the print job was sitting in the printer windows within windows. It was not there and I assume the print job is not making the trip from the DOS app into the Windows printing environment.

There are no other DOS based apps on the system.

If you are working with full Win98 installations you might have at least one DOS based app. Go the command prompt and CD to the Windows\Command directory.

Enter EDIT, type some text in the window and try to print it.

If you can't find EDIT.COM you might just try a DIR>PRN. This will send a directory listing to the default printer port.

Could be interesting.
