PWS on Windows ME 1

Windows Me is a Win 9X platform, so it should work. I have seen the copy found on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD work on Windows Me.

ToddWW, that's great! Tell that to my 2 computers at home that are both running Windows Me with Personal Web Server! LOL I installed the copy of Personal Web Server that was on my Visual Studio 6 Enterprise disk #2, and it works great.

OK .. I don't usually write notes to computers, but I have been known to talk to them from time to time, so here goes...

To: Your 2 Computers At Home
Cc: eclipse33, who is considering installing PWS on wME.

Our advice to you.

"Personal Web Server is Not Supported on Windows ME."

That means that you don't just lose support for PWS. It means you lose all Microsoft Support for ANY software on that computer if PWS is installed on that machine.

"Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition is not designed to work with a Web server. Although FrontPage 98 may be installed successfully on Windows Me, the Web server may not work. For this reason, it is not recommended that you install a Web server on Windows Me. This includes both the Microsoft Personal Web Server and the FrontPage Personal Web Server."

That tells me that the software MAY work, or MAY NOT work. For beginner ASP developers, they may be developing in an environment that does not work and not realize it until they move the application to IIS. No thanks, I'll pass !!

"It is recommended that you do not download or install PWS on Windows Me. If you want to install PWS on Windows Me, Microsoft recommends that you install it in a test environment, not on a primary computer or operating system."

And, of course, that means that Microsoft warns about the integrity of any other software or data on a Windows ME machine running PWS. And then, why would you want to setup a test environment for that ??

Those are portions of three, out of about 20, articles written regarding the warnings of installing and running PWS on Microsoft Windows ME. You can read all of them at the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Keyword: "Microsoft Personal Web Server"

Sincerely,

ToddWW

Ok, I'm not here to argue the issue. The question was: Can you install PWS on a Windows Me system? My answer is yes. I have a small network with 2 Windows Me sytems and a NT 4 server. I don't always feel like firing up the server to use IIS, so I installed PWS on the clients. For development I use IIS. Anyway, I have been using PWS on Windows Me for nearly a year without problems and I will continue to do so.

I'm sorry, the question was...

"I have found a link to PWS for Windows 95. Will it work with Windows ME". The answer is NOT "YES".

My original post was not geared to tell you that you were wrong, or that PWS cannot be installed on wME. I was very careful about that and only provided a link to MS Knowledge base and kept my personal opinion to myself.

I'm happy that PWS works on your ME environment, and I have to admit that I've cut some corners, against the advice of OEM, to gain solutions myself. But we should all be careful to pass that advice on to others.

I don't think there's any argument there.

Regards,

ToddWW
