How often should the battery in the PWM be replaced? Is there a way to test it?
 
Should last at least 5 years(up to 10 years) -test with a load tester with the batteries isolated.If you don't have a load tester you could risk using the Pabx as the load!If the batteries are stuffed as soon as you remove AC input low volts disconnect will trip and Pabx will die.However assuming some life is left in Batteries check the voltage over a period of time and just make sure AC input turned back on well before about 44 Volts (when LVDU kicks in)

Do not forget to make a safety backup before test!!
We test the batteries every 3 months via discharging and charging again. This also help extending the life.
 
Hmmm... well it is 12 years old so maybe I should just replace it? We did have a power failure last month that lasted over an hour and the phones stayed on. Does anyone know of a good source for them? Is it proprietary or a standard battery? Do I just unplug the old battery and put the new one in? Thanks for any help you can provide, Don
 
You can use Hawker SBS30. They fit in the cabinet.
 
We carry out conductance tests which give an idea of battery condition without disruption (can be done in hours). If we get an iffy result then we generally suggest replacement.

If your batteries are 12 years old - replace them! The fact that they held up during a recent power outage is nothing short of a miracle.

If you don't have a good way to load test batteries without the possibility of causing an outage, you can measure ac ripple across each battery.

Set your meter for ac millivolts and read acroos the terminals of each battery. A battery with excessive ripple (a reading that is significantly higher than the rest of the batteries in the string) is bad.
