Puzzling protection for ntoskrnl.exe file 1

I have started back changing windows images. This time xp instead of 2000. I have successfully changed the logon/logoff box images without any trouble. However, the startup image in ntoskrnl.exe is giving me all types of issues.

I changed the image in it just like I did with 2000. I have even tried the 2000 method of renaming the file and editing the boot.ini file to use it instead of ntoskrnl.exe. Neither worked.

I also tried replacing all locations I could think of that it would be replacing or loading from. I realized it was not replacing them as my image is still in the file. Nevertheless, these are the locations I replaced the original file with mine.

C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB956572$

windows/system32

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB956572\SP3QFE

Now I know the image is not being modified, and all the images have been changed, yet when windows loads, it shows the xp logo instead of mine. So I am wondering what file is it loading from? If it's loading from ntoskrnl.exe, how is it getting the xp image?

Thanks

This might not solve your problem but it is supposed to get rid of the progress bars and bitmap

Available switch options for the Windows XP and the Windows Server 2003 Boot.ini files

/noguiboot
This switch disables the bitmap that displays the progress bar for Windows startup. (The progress bar appears just before the logon prompt.)

Is this the one you tried?

/kernel=filename
With this switch, you can define the actual kernel that is loaded at startup. For example, type /kernel=ntkrnlmp.exe to load the Ntkrnlmp.exe file in the System32 folder. With this switch, you can switch between a debug-enabled kernel that is full of debugging code and a regular kernel.

The /kernal is the one I tried. That one works on windows 2000, however, I can not get it to work on xp. Its like there is a hidden file it loads from that I can not find.

e-freak - Windows File Protection comes to mind, it is way more restrictive in XP then w2k... with SP3 some things have changed, I dunno what or why...

with W7 around the corner, it will become SO much easier to change the BOOT SCREEN... See the FAQ in the W7 FORUM... ;-)

also to load your own BOOTSCREEN, why not use the /BOOTLOGO with the /NoGUI switch, and place the gfx (boot.bmp @ 16 colors and 640x480 size) file in your C:\WINDOWS folder...

e.g the line could look like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /BOOTLOGO /noguiboot

That sounds like a good idea, I will try it later today. As far as windows 7, might be easy right now, but I have a feeling it wont be when the final release comes out lol. It seems to be a pattern as the os grows, the harder it gets.

Never knew you could do that, switching the logo that easily. That worked perfectly. Thanks!!!!
