Hi..I'm a bit confused, what I want to do is access my redhat server from my laptop over a secure connection using ssh i believe. So is putty a client or a server, that is should I install putty on my laptop or my server? From what I read I believe its only a client, if so what do I need to put on my server in order for putty to connect to it? or can i just put putty on both?

thanks all!!!!

Hi,

putty is a client, but not a completely new one, yet another ssh (or telnet) client. It will connect to an ssh (or telnet) server.
So you will need putty on your laptop, and ssh on your server.

hope this helps

hoinz could technically be corrected that you need to put "sshd" on the server, which is the server daemon/service from the ssh product.

This is a silly little correction, but I thought worth noting.

"ssh" is a general package of software and the command line for the secure CLIENT. "sshd" is the server/service/daemon that runs on the box you're trying to reach with putty or ssh.

That's correct; I was thinking of 'the ssh product'.
It's better to avoid possible misunderstandings.

Thanks both for that!! sure makes a lot more sense now.. :)

If the server has X, PuTTY allows for X forwarding, but it's complicated as you'll need to install Cygwin or XWin32/XWin64 ... It may be worth the trouble, or may just be a pain in the butt.
