I just put a new multi-image hard drive in a customers bcm50 and everything goes according to the manual until it gets to the point of me PUTTY'g into it to select image. It keeps saying "connection refused" no matter what i try. I can ping the chassis on the OAM port, just nothing else. I had to enter a static address on my PC, so i'm guessing the dhcp isn't working yet either. I have tried telnet, ftp, etc but nothing. I'm a bit stalled here, any idea's?

also, this was a chassis that started out life as a pre-release 3.0 and got keycoded up to a release 3.0. I have the license file, so when/ if i ever do get through the putty attempt, what release do i load, the previous release or the "keycoded" release?

(I'm stuck on page 53 of 88 of the bcm50-rls installation manual (I can try and post the page if required)

thanks in advance

Select the last release it had prior to HD fail.
Using SSH on Putty?

yes, i am using SSH on PuTTY, just keeps saying connection refused

What IP address are you using?. I thought it was 192.168.1.2 and 255.255.255.0 for the BCM 50 / 450 systems on LAN 1. I'm assuming that you can ping the address OK. If you were trying the OAM port, are you using 10.10.11.1 and 255.255.255.252.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

i am on the OAM on the bcm50 with 10.10.11.2 (255.255.255.252) and i can ping 10.10.11.1 (the BCM i assume - wireshark says nortel) and its just me and the bcm, no other devices (i'm plugged directly into the OAM port with my laptop). 192.168.1.2 does not respond when i plug into the LAN port although i see ethernet activity

When you boot the BCM50 with the new multi-image drive, is the power LED (bottom one) solid green and the status LED (top) flashing amber?

yes it is....its like i read the manual and figure it works JUST like THAT for everyone but me when i'm in a hurry

power LED = solid green
status LED = flashing amber

That's what you should see. Sorry to ask a stupid question, but are you using PuTTY to connect to the BCM using SSH version 2? I asked because you mentioned telnet and FTP (neither of them is enabled and thus cannot work). If you do, the only other thing you might consider trying is to use the hard drive in another BCM (50 or 450) to convert it to the desired image and then use it in this BCM50 that is giving you problems.

i just tried to force it to use version 1 and then force it to use version 2 to no avail. I tried telnet and ftp just to see if i could "sneak in" that way

i don't have anymore chassis on my shelf at the moment, i may need to return this hard drive if my supplier will accept it and get a release 3 hard drive from somewhere. I think i have a release 3 image cd kit but wouldn't even know where to begin on that rabbit trail

thanks

if the chassis answers back and says "connection refused" does that not mean that it at least got my request to initiate a PuTTY session and refused it?

box was pooched because the hard drive in it wouldn't spin up, the new one spins up, i at that time installed a spare drive out of a working BCM and it came up.

Power surges? blackout? lighting? dust?

I meant what caused it to fail, not the symptom of the HD.
i.e. it can also cause damage other parts including internal BCM.

"if the chassis answers back and says "connection refused" does that not mean that it at least got my request to initiate a PuTTY session and refused it?"
Correct!

Refresher...

PC/Laptop - IP Address = 10.10.11.2
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.252

Putty - into 10.10.11.1 on the OAM port, furthest left (terminal symbol)
Port 22
SSH

I was going to suggest rechecking the subnet mask and port 22 as well. I've installed several multi-image drives using the OAM port with no problems. It can take a couple of minutes for the networking in the BCM to be ready. DHCP usually works when I have done this. Try setting your PC to obtain an IP address automatically and see what happens.

i have done this with two of my laptops (in case one of them was the issue), i'm in the furthest left port on the bcm50 (oam), running putty, port 22 SSH and i am 10.10.11.2 (255.255.255.252) trying to hit 10.10.11.1 with putty. I am starting to suspect somehow that the Putty port got "turned off" if that is the correct term. I wonder if i do a level 2 reset will that ensure the putty port is "open

If you invoke L1/L2 reset, you won't be able to use the BCM50 to select a release on the multi-image hard drive for sure. The L1/L2 reset configures the BCM50 BIOS to boot in a special way (not compatible with the multi-image hard drive before a release is selected). In short, don't do that!

i believe i tried that as well. I'm not at the chassis right now, i'll check tomorrow, but i think i tried all the remote protocols i had at my disposal

i just found a neat port scan tool and it too says the ip address 10.10.11.1 is alive. It just says it is not being allowed to connect to this bcm on port 22 via SSH

so according to wireshark, i see the putty requests go out and the return packets and the pings and the return pings, it just isn't letting me in. (the ol' "connection refused" still)

the only 2 other things i can think of is
1 - shoving the old hard drive in, and seeing if i can at least get past this point (although i think that is a waste of time, because the hd wouldn't even spin up), these must be really junk drives, i had this thing so protected with lightning protectors, UPS's and surge protectors the Marines couldn't have gotten through its defenses
2 - i think i have a customer that MAY agree to me grabbing his hard drive this weekend to see what i can do with it in this chassis (although this is virgin territory for me, and i only have IP Offices to back me up if something goes astray)

other than that, maybe like was mentioned earlier here, getting a single image drive and throw this one out and lick my $$$ wounds.

I'm still puzzled why you can't use LAN1. Do you have access to another BCM50 to check that you can use putty to connect?.
As you have a release 3.0 system, I was recently able to do a complete image via the use of a sector by sector program called WinHex. Acronis didn't work for me, although it does for BCM 50 versions 1 & 2.

I did a copy from a good BCM 50 3.0 hard disk onto another one OK. I tend to keep spare disks complete with software if possible.
