We need to put page numbers at the bottom of the pages, is there away of doing this so the page numbers automatically change, like in word, also, if you add more pages to the document?

thank you.

Jo,
In Acrobat 5 alone, you can add a page number to the bottom of each page by using the TouchUp Text tool. BUT, you don't have the added functionality of automated page number rollovers. That's a function of your word processing program. In PageMaker, we use a text code on the master pages that automatically add the correct page number in the doc and rollover from page to page. When we Distill the doc, the page numbers come along as part of the doc thanks to PageMaker. Acrobat will give each page a sequential number (in the lower left corner you'll see 1 of 2) but it's not a part of the actual page and will not be reproduced when the page is printed.

Think of Acrobat as a glorified camera that takes a picture of each page for display but doesn't modify any of the objects in the original scene. It has the capability to TouchUp the Text but not generate it's own. This is the case in version 5. I've not yet had the opportunity to work in Acrobat 6 so I can't speak for that version.

If you have Acrobat 6, then you can add page numbers very easily (Document, Add Headers and Footers...). (I'm afraid I don't know whether this is only available in Professional or whether it's also available in Standard - I have Professional, and it is available there.)

Otherwise, if you're using Acrobat 5, you could do it with JavaScript and fields. Not sure exactly how, though. It'd probably take me a few hours to find it or work it out and I haven't ever needed to do it. Check out the JavaScript guide that comes with Acrobat 5 where, with a bit of work, you will probably be able to find the solution.

You might try AbracadabraTOOLS, a free utility for Acrobat 5/6. AbracadabraTOOLS supports all MacOS and Windows versions. You can use it to add page numbers, count the number of words, and several other things.

I haven't done much with it myself, but it might help you.
