Hello, I am not very experienced with computers but I do know some stuff. I am taking my old 20 GB hard drive from my old computer, it has windows ME installed on it right now, and I want to put it into my new computer which already has a 75 GB hard drive with windows XP installed on it. How do I do this so i can have both hard drives installed on my new computer?

Do you want to be able boot from both HD's?

Umm. I want to boot from the 70gb and use the 20gb for more storage if thats possible.

I'll assume your old drive is IDE.

What kind of drive is the new 75Gb? and What plugs are available in your new PC for hard drives? Are they also IDE or SATA?

If Your old drive is IDE and your new PC only supports SATA, you'll ave to buy either an IDE PCI card, or a SATA to IDE converter.

If you have an available IDE cable in your new computer, you can just plug your old Drive to that. Making sure the jumpers are set correctly depending on the position of the drive.

Should not be a problem.
Connect the HD to the IDE 2 cable(the cable that the larger HD is not connected to). If an optical drive(CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, etc.) is already connected to the IDE-2 cable, then make sure that it has a different jumper position(Master or Slave, found on the back of the drives) than the HD.

so It will work fine if I install this hard drive? Do I need to clear the 20 GB of the OS? I figured out both hard drives are ATA

Then you'll have no problem. you don't need to clear the Os. You can if you want to get back space. but you can do that once it s installed and usable. Just delete the Windows folder from that drive, and anything you don't want to keep.

You can install it on the same IDE cable as the 75gb. But its o.k to put it on the secondary, along with the optical drive. Just make sure the jumper settings are correct. One master and the other one slave.

Alright, I tried to install it but the other hard drive doesnt have a 40 pin connector thing. So does this mean its not an ATA drive?

How many pins does it have? What brand and how old was the computer it came out of? What does the drive have for identifing information on it ? IE: brand any type of model numbers?

If not a "40 pin connector thing" then what does it have?

The CD drive what's it connected to? how is it connected to?

I have no Idea what it has but its not 40 pin connector, it had like 2 connectors going into the hard drive and then they go somewhere, My motherboard is GeForce6100SM-M, I think there was a ribbon going to the IDE connector and that ribbon went to the cd rom drive. So im confused

Im trying to find out what kind of hard drive the 75GB is, i think its a SEAGATE im lookin..

Is the cable going to the 75GB narrow? like no more than half an inch in width? If so then its most likely a SATA drive.

If the cable that goes to the Cd-Rom is IDE, you can use that to plug in the old hard drive. Provided is has a second plug on the cable.

If it doesn't then you'll need go out and buy an IDE cable with two connectors. so you can have both the CD-Rom and the old hard drive in the same IDE channel.

My guess is your 75GB is a SATA drive. Your 20GB drive should be connected to the same cable that is leaving the connector right next to the motherboard's power connector (blue connector in the following picture)

If something is already connected to this ribbon cable either set both devices to Cable Select (CS) or one as Master the other Slave.

Yes, So the blue connector thing is leading to the Cd-rom so all I have to do is connect it to the slave connector on the ribbon right? On the 20GB there is a 4 pin type thing connector for power im guessing thats whats its for, do I need to connect anything to this? or just connect it to the ribbon.

Conect the ribbon in the long slot. Plug one of the white plugs from your power supply to the four pin spot.

alright good, i did that before but it didnt boot up, but I'll try it again

alright I installed it but it doesnt show up in My Computer

Please confirm that you have checked the jumpers on both your CD-ROM drive and your 20GB drive. Either both must be set to Cable Select (CS) or one as Master (MA) and the other Slave (SL).

If jumpers are correct, does BIOS see you 20GB drive as installed? And if so, does Disk Management see it? (Start, Run..., diskmgmt.msc)
