Hi,

I have 2 VLANs in my Network, one for Data and one for Voice. All PCs(Data) are connected to IP-Phoones(Voice) which in turn are conneected to the Switch. PCs resides on one Subnet and IP-Phones reside on the other.
What i want to know is how i can connect a Laptop to be in the same subnet as the IP-Phones. So i can make some troubleshooting. Two different DHCP server are used.
Should i give him a static IP Adress? or just making a new IP lease in the DHCP server? Do the switch need to be configured for this? Im using Cisco Harware.

Thank you

STATICLY ASSIGN VOICE VLAN TO THE PC NIC CARD - there are not a lot of nic cards that will do this, but there are some. I have one for my laptop to accomplish exactly what you are asking. Once the VLAN ID is on the NIC card, it will request a DHCP address from that VLAN.

Why not just set the native VLAN on the port in question to the voice VLAN?

Thanks both,
@paterson
I cant configure a VOICE VLAN ID on my NIC

Can i just unplug the Cable from one of the IP-Phones, wait for a while(because of Inline Power) and then plug it on my Laptop, having assigned to the laptop one of the IP-Addresses in the same subnet as the IP-Phones? will this work`?

Should work fine. You shouldn't need to wait any length of time at all - you can plug a PC into a POE port and it won't damage anything.

Hi biv,

Well Cisco recommend waiting 10sec,

quote:

Caution The computer’s network card cannot receive power through the network connection; if power comes through the connection, the network card can be destroyed. To protect a network card, wait 10 seconds or longer after unplugging the cable from the phone before plugging it into a computer. This delay gives the switch enough time to recognize that there is no longer a phone on the line and to stop providing power to the cable.

qoute end.

however, i assigned my Laptop a static IP but it didnt work. I cant ping anything on the subnet.

Thanks

How about forcing the port on the Cisco switch to your voice vlan?

int fa0/20
switchport access vlan 2

This works fine for my laptop, along with a static IP address in the voice vlan subnet.
