Purge GP

Hi, my company's GP(version 8.0) is becoming bigger and bigger since a lot of transactions and journals.
I will do a backup first, and then I want to purge history data and make the database size much smaller and make the speed much faster.
What will be the best procedure to do so?
I tried to "remove journals" on a test database, but the size of the database didn't go down a bit:(
