Pulling Data from a Sub Report

I am trying to pull one value from a subreport in Crystal Reports. I can obtain the value using a shared variable, that is no problem.
In the main report I want to group the report based on that value but when I look at the grouping expert, the formula will not appear which contains the shared variable.
Can someone help please.
The formula which contains the shared variable does appear on the detail record on the main report.

Since the subreport fires AFTER the main report, you can't use subreports as groups in a main report.

I suspect that you should make the main the subreport and vice-versa, but obviously from your lack of technical information posted it's impossible to tell.
