Hey guys

I have for the past year or so been creating ntranet websites with not problem but I have decided that I would like to publish a website on the internet.

I already registered the name with register.com

I tried to publish a file that I created called index.htm
with netscape 7.0 it said that it published it succefully but when I go to the website that I registered it still told me my webpage will be coming soon I went into my account my all I see is the name of my website in my manager and there is no way to upload from within my manager.
do I need a web hosting website to host my site or was registering my name the only thing I had to do.
I am kind of new to this so if you can help me out I would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi mate,

Registering a domain name is simply that, you get the name, nothing else.

You now need to get space on a server somewhere to host your site.

After you find a suitable host, you change the DNS records for your domain so that it points to your new server.

Choosing a host is a difficult task, there are many free ones but they come at a price. Either high downtime, no support or advertising are just some of the drawbacks of a free host.

If this is for a personal site, then a free host might be great for you, but if it is a business site then never ever use a free host, it looks bad for business if you can't afford to pay to have an advert free site.

The other option is to set-up and run your own server, this is something that a lot more people are doing now. The drawbacks of this are that your machine needs to be on 24/7, if it goes down then you have to fix it, you need a good connection etc etc.

The pros outweight the cons in most cases though, you have full control over your server config. If you need a module for a script then you can do it without incurring an additional cost. You could make some money by hosting friends or clients etc etc.

Hope this helps Wullie
