Publisher 97 not accessing jpegs

Using Publisher 97 with Win98 I suddenly stopped being able to access my jpegs. When I tried to insert a picture, it showed the folders where they were stored, some gifs, but no jpegs. I may have deleted something or changed a setting but I don't know what.

Accessing and using my jpegs in all other programs works fine.

Microsoft Help sent me to the OEM (Gateway) Tech Support. after over 40 minutes with 2 reps (at $1.50 per minute) I still had no solution. The rep only suggested downloading MS Eraser 97, deleteing Office (with all its programs) and Publisher and reinstalling from my CDs. He suspected it was a registry problem where Publisher 97 wasn't associating jpegs. This seems very drastic and I am reluctant to do it.

I finally called MS Help who said they will help for a fixed fee of $35 payable only on solution. Has anyone used them? I am afraid to call, pay, and then be told it's not a Microsoft problem.

Thanks for looking, I miraculously solved the problem.

Rather than erase Office and Publisher, and fully reinstall, I just reinstalled Office over itself and the file problem was corrected. Though I did reinstall Publisher previously, both programs had to be redone since (in my installation anyway) Office and Publisher are linked.

Now to complain to the OEM tech support for charging me for 40 minutes, and never suggesting this solution.
