Hello Guys & Gals.

I new to setting up firewalls and im seeking help on a matter that has me ripping my hair out. Im currently trying to launch a public internet games server from an internal Lan host. Our network is filtered through LAN & WAN over a 2mb pipe through a sonicwall firewall. I've opened the relevant ports (27950-60) on the router to allow the game to passthrough.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to be able to see the server on the net rather than only seeing it as a Lan server?

What kind of gameserver are you setting up? Counter-Strike? If it's counter-strike the server needs to be set up as an Internet gameserver and then it won't be viewable as a LAN-server anymore.

Im setting up a wolfenstein ET server. The server config etc is good to go everything looks fine for dedicated internet server. I cant seem to sort out the firewall though as I get a message back about UDP packets!

Thats correct. You have to open for UDP since all gamingservers use udp and not tcp. Try to open for TCP and UDP all together to see if it works. Open for port 80 or 21 and install a or ftp server and check to see if you can connect to the server.

Ok I setup 2xftp's. One from LAN-WAN and one from WAN-LAN, I opened up UDP on ports 27950-27960 and the same on TCP.
Im trying to launch this server from a fast pc i have on an internal LAN, with the host ip of 192.168.x.x but still not getting through firewall.

Okay. Let me get this straight.

You have a dsl-router, a sonic firewall and then your gameserver?

Do you have anything working from your outside wan to your inside lan ? Do you know how to make NAT entries?

/Christian

Nope! lol

As i said i've just been given the duty of taking care of the network after our old net admin left us, I normaly fix pc's etc and patch cables....lol, so firewalls are a new thing to me. I managed to set up an IRC channel etc that works from the outside and an FTP site, but when i try and run the games server through the same ports Im getting UDP errors. I think what i need is step by step instructions.

I know, I know before you say it.....thick as f**k...hee hee.

Hehe.. okay, you are in deep sh*t ;-) I don't really know what to say then. As I can understand it you already have services on the inside of your firewall (FTP-Server) or is it placed on the outside of the firewall?

Ok here is what ive done so far

Opened UDP ports on 25750-60,17
Opened TCP ports on 27950-60,6

Created 2 rules:-
LAN / WAN 192.168.10.227 - 0.0.0.0
WAN / LAN 0.0.0.0 - 192.168.10.227

192.168.10.227 being my own machine on the network.
Is there anything ive missed that i need to do?
