I had a user who deleted a public folder. When I try to recover it I would get about 1400 items then crash and the folder would disappear. I then created another folder and while it was recovering the original I moved the data to the new folder. Now, when I try to add the SMTP I get that it already exists. I went into Active Dir users and computers and Exchange system objects and removed the SMTP addresses from the original. It let me then add the addresses but mail would bounce back. After another 10 minutes the folder was no longer mail enabled. I re-enabled that and now it tells me that the SMTP address I want exist in the NEW folder I created. When I look at the SMTP in the folder properties I do not see any of them.
Hopefully I explained this correctly. I am just confused as to what do to now.

I got the SMTP in there for now at least but when I send a message I get:
Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:

From the message, it looks like this is an X500 addressing issue. You need to use ADSIEdit find the AD object for this folder and add this as an additional entry to ProxyAddresses property:

"X500:/O=XXX/OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=F33268ACA4FBE74BA6B5BBEAE33D2F8A-00C75968E745@XXX.NET"

Of course, you'd edit those XXX bits.

Basically the client has the X500 address of the public folder cached, so it tries to reach the X500 address that the original PF had. If you add this proxyaddress entry, then the cached entry will work again.

Alternately you can edit the cache in Outlook and delete the cached entry for this smtp address.
