We're in the process of migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. On the client side we have a mix of Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 with both Windows XP and 7 as OSes. We've found one snag where trying to search a Public Contacts folder produces the message "Instant Search encountered a problem while trying to display search results. Modifying your query may resolve this problem."

This only seems to happen for an Outlook 2010 user who's mailbox is on the Exchange 2010 server. The public contacts folders are still on the Exchange 2003 server. We're not sure if Windows 7 plays a role or not since we don't have a box with XP and Outlook 2010 on it. We haven't exhaustively tested all combinations, but the Outlook2010/Exchange 2010 combo seems to be the only one exhibiting this problem. Even with this combo, search works from within OWA. Has anyone ever seen this?

Need to setup replicas of the Public Folders to the Exchange 2010 server. This way, when the user with Outlook 2010 goes to access the public folder and/or search the PF it will choose the PF copy on the local Exchange 2010 server first. Windows 7 will then properly index the public folder as needed. This should resolve your search issue. Windows 7 search functions, compared to XP, have changed and is likely the cause of your issue. Make a XP machine with O2K and see if the search works.

We did find a another source that also points in that direction. We're going to give it a shot. Thanks.
