Customer of our firm was explaining to us that they are adding an add'l POS terminal to their system and it is to be located outside. It'll be portable so each day they will move the POS terminal onto the patio. The POS company suggested an exterior RJ45 jack on the patio to connect to the POS server. However I feel this is not a secure approach. Any advice as to how they could best secure that connection. It's a public area and anyone could plug their laptop into it when the restaurant is closed. They also run all their credit cards thru their POS system.

There are a few ways of going about this.
1. Place a locking cover over the jack. There are many manufacturers that provide covers that go over the wall plate that can be locked either by a key or padlock. You would need to establish a daily procedure that the lock is in place and engaged when the location is not attended by an employee. This daily check would include the off-season when the patio is not in use.
2. Disable the switch port when not in use. If the RJ45 jack is not on the network, it is not a "network jack". This would also need to be checked as part of your daily operational security procedures.
3. It has been accepted that you can use mitigating controls such as 802.1x or MAC authentication to identify and control devices that are allowed on your network. You need to be careful with MAC authentication as MAC addresses are easily spoofed.
4. Use a combination of the above.
