If I wanted to PtoV a Windows 2000 server, would I generally need to install any vmware tools on the physical server that I'm PtoV'ing?

Or can I just go to my VI 3 Virtual Center, and point to the physical server I'd like to PtoV and just handle it that way without installing anything on that server..

The main fact is that there is limited disk space on the c: and d: drive of this physical server and would like to know if i can get away with just making it a vm without installing additional tools on it.

Any information would be appreciated

have a great day

You don't have to install the VMTools on the physical server. You can convert it to a virtual then install the tools. You do have to install the Converter Agent if you use the VMWare Converter but it is a pretty small install. From the converter you can resize the drives a little bigger.

Cheers

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

In fact you cannot install VMware tools on a non-vmware box. The installation will simply fail. I certainly suggest installing vmware tools once the P2V is complete. You will get the correct keyboard, video, NIC and mouse drivers along with the balloon driver. If you intend to vmotion sessions or use DRS, you need vmware tools installed. VMware tools also allows you to synch the guest time withthe host time.

Use VMware conveter tool..its too easy and you actually does not have to do anything...its the easiest way to do P2V..
