There are several factors. First of all, Microsoft doesn't recommend that you have more than 100 objects (folders, emails with or without attachments, etc.) listed directly under the Inbox of the PST. So, be careful you're not creating subfolders under the Inbox. All subfolders should be directly under the root of the PST.
Secondly, the inbox repair tool (IRT) has been known to have problems repairing PST's that are larger than 2GB. I usually don't recommend that you ever let your MAIN pst get larger than 300-400 MB. The reason is that you can have as many PST's as you want. The one that receives new mail should be the smallest and held to this restriction. If you need more space, create a new one. Once that one reaches close to a GIG in size, create another one. You get the idea!
You can have more than 100 objects under the inbox, but the more you have, the slower it will run. If you create subfolders elsewhere in the PST for storage, this will help speed at least the load time (we're talking if you've got thousands of emails).
I forgot to mention also that there really isn't a set size limit to when a PST starts to act up. It's all about folder management and where you throw incoming email. With poor management, it may act up around 100-200 MB in size or sooner. With good management, you shouldn't notice any problems until it gets above a GIG.
Just as long as you don't ever let the PST get close to 2GB!!
Depending where the PST file is being stored we have two different limits.
If the PST file is on a network drive then somewhere between 150MB and 170MB we tell the client to create a new PST file rather than adding to this file. Performace gets real sluggish sometimes though some clients have been able to get files much bigger on the network. We usually end hearing from them eventually when they have one of these big file.
If it is on a local drive then we go with the 2GB limit. joegz

Each .pst file can contain 16,384 items. An item is either a folder, message, task, etc. Each folder can contain a maximum of 16,384 items. If you select the option to "Allow upgrade to large tables," each folder can contain up to 65,536 items. The total file size of a .pst cannot exceed 2 Gigabytes (GB).
