Our Customer at a major University reports he's getting Status 161 "User Count Exceeded" when running more than three workstations in our application.

We have verified User Count in License Admin on all workstations is set to 5.

Database is located on shared drive on a computer/server without worksgroup engine installed (so I've been told).

We have also had customer force Protocol on each workstation to NETBIOS eliminating TCPIP and IPXSPX to prohibit possible communications with a "server Engine"

Still no luck in running more than 3 workstations concurrently.

Here's a thought - let me know your opinion on this.... If 5 user Workgroup Engine is installed on 7 workstations and w3dbsmgr.exe is loaded on startup with -srde switches and No database is being referenced, does the 161 error occur when more than 5 users have open datafiles in same folder or when more than 5 users have w3dbsmgr.exe running even though only a few have files open in the shared folder??

Any Ideas as to where to look ??

A few questions:
1. Do the 161s always occur on the fourth workstation regardless of which one it is?
2. Do the data files use a Permanent Gateway?
3. Have you used the Monitor to find out what the license count that Pervasive sees for engine that's opening the files.

Now, a few comments.
1. Only one PSQL engine can open a data file at any given time. If two engines try to open the files, the second engine will get a status 85.
2. The user count is only affected when an applications opens a data file.
3. You might try setting a Permanent Gateway on the files if the "server" really doesn't have a PSQL engine installed on it.
4. Ideally, you would install an engine on the "server". The WGE is limited to 5 users. If you've got 7 users, you probably should switch to the Server Engine.

Customer has two workstations running our application and has approx 10 files open.

Ran License Admin on one workstation and see 5 user limit but no indication of any activity ie; open files=0, license in use =0, threads=0

Customer says no ~pvsw~.loc file in shared folder on server.
Based upon this we assume he's got a 2 user server installed that's servicing the workstations.

We had also asked him to change protocol to NETBIOS rather than tcp/ip SPXII in hopes that this would disable communication with a psql server.

We're still unable to determine who's serving files. All workgroup engines have 5 user license and we've verified that.

Will have customer intall Permanent Gateway tomorrow and see if that is the solution.

Still waiting for more hands on time with customer. He's running but limping.

The only 2 user PSQL I'm aware of is on NetWare. Is the data on a Novell server?
You could also try connecting to the server using the PSQL monitor. That should confirm whether the server is running an engine and whether it's serving the data.

If the server is running a server engine, you might consider adding server engine licenses. It'll be better than trying to get a bunch of WGEs to share the data.
