What happens if I place a psd-file and all its layers to Illustrator? What will happen to the quality of the file?

My problem is... I have a design in psd-format, but my client would prefer a vector based eps-file. Can I do it the easy way (just move the design to Illustrator and save as eps) or will it affect the quality of the design and how much? I don't think the client needs to enlarge the design (which I think COULD be a problem when doing this), it's just easier for them to handle it when preparing for print.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Placing a raster file in Illustrator will not affect the quality, but it will NOT turn it into vectors... It will stay raster.

I can't recall how many times people have sent me eps files with jpegs in them... It doesn't look very professional.

You could re-draw it in Illustrator, or use a raster-to-vector conversion program like Streamline.

Thank you, Bert. This was very helpful.

I will probably hear something from this client tomorrow.. Earlier I sent them jpegs (from psd-files) and they were happy with them. They have just recently started to ask for vector based eps instead. Not sure if it's more important to them to have the design in vector format or eps (or both equally).

I am curious about Streamline... I must surf the net for some more info. Is this program easy to use and how well does it convert the design from raster to vector (is it just one click ;))?

Thanks again!

Streamline hasn't been updated since the mid-90's. It does a decent job of generating vectors from raster, but there's nothing like using the pen tool if you want true accuracy and quality results.

There are some settings that need to be customized in SL, but it's pretty straight forward.

CS2 has a "Live Trace" feature that supposedly works OK.
