I'm trying to save a color image as a gif file while maintaining the transparency. I don't want any matte. Once I set the opacity to 51%, it reverts to 100% as an optimized gif. Anything below that and the image is completely transparent...no color shows up at all.

GIF only supports 1 bit transparency - as in it is either there or it is not (1 level).

Try PNG for 8 bit (256 levels) transparency. It is not supported on all web browsers though.

..or prepare your graphic with the background included.
