PS/2 Mouse/Keyboard problem (long)

Hi there,

I run a P4 1.4ghz, with an Intel D850GB board, with Windows ME installed and 128MB of RAM.

A few months ago I was using the PC when it decided to lock up, and upon rebooting I found that the PS/2 Microsoft Intellimouse I was using was not responding. I uninstalled the drivers in an attempt to get the PC to automatically detect the mouse upon rebooting, but nothing happened. So I had to use a Microsoft serial mouse in the meantime as it was driving me insane.

I then attempted to reinstall the drivers for the PS/2 mouse, and somehow it detected it.

Now this gets really weird, probably due to immense stupidity on my behalf. After unplugging the serial mouse and uninstalling it, and rebooting, the PS/2 mouse worked on startup for all of 1 minute, then started cutting out before finally freezing. I reboot, and BIOS spits back that there is a keyboard error. A few more times, and the keyboard decides to work. I accessed the Control Panel and it told me that there was already another PS/2 Intellimouse
detected and it was conflicting with it. I decided to uninstall BOTH instances of the Intellimouse, and upon rebooting, it detected it, installed the drivers and then hung.

I've checked out the pins on the mouse, and they look fine.

Based on this rather lengthy yet probably muddy information, would anyone be able to tell me other processes I should try before giving up and purchasing a new USB mouse or adaptor? Would it be a hardware or a weird software problem? Or should I just stick with using the serial mouse until I purchase a copy of XP and pray to someone that the problem fixes itself?

Thanks for your time - your help would be most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd buy the cheapest ps/2 mouse possible, uninstall the intellimouse and reboot with the cheapo plugged in. If you can use it for a few days, I'd lay blame on the intellimouse. If you have the same problems, it's likely the mouse port.
