I have a Windows 2003 Server with Windows XP Clients. The clients use a mandatory profile and have desktop restrictions defined in the Windows 2003 Group Policy Editor. When they use Internet explorer, they are promted for the username and password for the proxy server. We have a username but a password is not required (i.e. blank). When I enter the username and click ok I can browse the Internet. However, when they log off and log on another time, they have to re-input the username. I have tried ticking the remember password box but this does not help. Is there anyway of getting the server/client/IE6 to remember the details as I dont want the users to have to enter the username everytime they use a pc. All clients use the same mandatory profile. Mant thanks in advance.

The Mandatory profile rewrites the registry hive that is used to store the saved password credentials.

Can you remove the username and password requirements for the proxy server?

Can you suspend for a day or so the mandatory profile, but renaming ntuser.man to ntuser.dat?

Thanks for your comments. I created a profile and saved the password in this profile. This profile was then copied to the server. The proxy server is not on the same premises and is governed by a education authority so we have no say in this or changing usernames or passwords.

Are you saying if I rename the ntuser from man to dat this would solve the issue. I don't really want to do this as users will mess with the desktop settings.

If you temporarily remove the .man, the ntuser.dat becomes writable. After the proxy settings are made, revert back to .man
