I'm battling a configuration change in a client's network and I seem to be stumped. They switched from an ISDN line to a DSL line. Formerly, they were connecting with an NT 4 Server running MS Proxy Server 2, and the external interface of the Proxy was on a public IP address, and the internal was on a private address.

Now that there's a Cisco router in the loop, and they haven't purchased any static IPs (their provider keeps their name pointed to their dynamic IP address with dynamic DNS, I presume), the only public address is the outside of the Cisco. Between the Cisco and the Proxy, I have a non-public subnet, then a different non-public subnet for the rest of the network.

DSL ==> CISCO RTR ==========> PROXY SVR============>network

DHCP 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2 10.0.0.2

Exchange Server 5.5 runs on the same machine as Proxy 2.0.
I can no longer get incoming mail through the Internet Mail Connector. I can send it outbound, no problem.

Yes, the DNS has been updated to point to their new public address.

What am I missing to make Exchange receive incoming messages?

Thanks,

Gersen

For a DNS change to take effect one has to wait at least 48 hours.

Other than that try to telnet into your server from outside as well as from inside on ports 25 and 110 on the specific IP.

If you can do that you are ok and you need to wait for DNS to replicate. Hope this Helps

Maruis, thanks for your comments!

We are well past the point where some mail should have reached their server. When I have dealt with DNS changes in the past, the mail server starts getting activity within about 6 hours. We are well past 24 at this time.

I can ping the address that their mail service resolves to, but can't telnet to port 25. Exchange Server is not listening at their public address...

I am going to be onsite in the morning, trying to locate the problem, with an old TechNet CD in hand... If I come up with anything, I'll post it.

If they don't have any more static ips (i assume you mean real / internet ip's) how are they going to get mail if you don't have NAT enabled? Are they hosting their own mail server with their own domain? If so or even if not the Internet will have to be able to get to the exchange box by either nat or internet ip.

Try going into your control panel and bringing up your WSP Client settings. Make sure that is pointing to your proxy machine, if it is the same as your local machine then I would assume that you just plug in the name of the local machine. See if that helps.
