PROVIDER = microsoft.jet.OLEDB.4.0 - operation not supported

I'm sure its a very silly question (new to DB programming), but when trying to use recordset.addnew with an access 200 DB (Provider OLEDB.4.0) I get an error saying

'the operation requested by the application is not supported by the provider'.

Everything else workd fine, its just the addnew method.
