i would use the ADodb method to create a link between an vc++ application and Access 97. what is the correct microsoft jet OLEDB i need to use, 4.0 or 3.51?

Definitely 3.51.

It is also written in article :
"Using the ADO Objects Effectively" at
"Table 1. OLE DB providers for Access."

from MSDN (I have april 2001)
