Hello All,

This might be a stupid question as I am new to IBM/UNIX/LINUX environment. When these servers are introduced to the network (AS400/UNIX)what protocols are used to communicate with these systems?

Thanks

Hi,
I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. Do you want to connect from your Windows PC or do you want to connect from one Unix system to another??

Unix-to-Unix I prefer rlogin (rlogin hostname). I don't know AS/400 or Windows but they would most have a telnet client.

Just let me know exactly what you want and maybe I can help you.

Hello,

I was just wondering what protocols are needed or are running on a UNIX/AS400 server. IP or anything else. Lets say I have a WIndows network (IP) and I am going to introduce a UNIX mail server or AS400. Would I just need IP on the desktops to connect to them? I assume I would, but I don't know if there are any other protocols I would need in addition to IP.
Thanks

Hi,
you need IP as the "base" protocol. If you wish to connect to the server with the Telnet protocol it uses TCP/IP.

Hope that helps. Henrik Morsing

UNIX supports TCP and UDP and tokenring and ethernet and X25, etc, and with AIX being an IBM product supports all their weird stuff like SNA, which the AS/400 would also understand. I have even seen AIX machines running an ESCON emulator with a channel attachment for a mainframe. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation

Hi,

AIX and AS/400 all support TCP/IP and SNA? What is your current env.? What do you want do?
