I manage a Windows network, one computer has WindowsNT 4.0 S.P.4, and most all the 30 computers have Win98 only a few have Win95. I purchased a program called SyGate, for multiple users to go online at the same time with a 6 user License. which seems to run fine on all the computers that I've installed it on. Then we got a program for our Canon fax machine so everybody could send and receive faxes from their desktop computers. That was the greatest thing since the computers themselves, everybody like this fax ability. Now of course you know it didn't go all that good, the General manager's computer will not go online now. If he wants to fax I have to enable the DNS in the TCP/IP properties, and disable it if he wants to go online. Now you know he don't like that so he just faxes. I've tried setting the settings on his computer like every other one, but it don’t work. All the computers have a static TCP/IP address and also NetBEUI for protocols and I didn't have any problems with them, they also have the DNS enabled on them. Any suggestions? I have learned everything by trial and error. I have had to troubleshoot and solve many problems, but this one is really strange.
I had a short dealing with SyGate and dumped it after 2 week for being unstable and tempermental. I replaced it with a router using NAT ( Network Address translation) You can get a cheap LinkSys router now for about 200.00 Highly recommended, or a cheap Cisco or Webramp.

Now with that said, I would suspect that you need to get the Cannon Fax setup as a "user" for the SyGate DNS. SyGate uses it's own DNS and DHCP if needed. The fact that you have enable or disable DNS points to the SyGate configuration as the issue. You should be able to get it to work with some tweaking of SyGate.

If you are running DNS on your NT, it could also be part of the problem with SyGate. I remember having to play with it but I do not remember exactly what I had to tweak.

Good luck!

Mike

I remember that we had any Problems with Sygate too, and in the moment we are checking an evaluation version of Wingate.
It looks fine and I think our boss will give the ok to purchase it
hnd
hasso55@yahoo.com

I am no expert, but have had some dealings with faxing and networks.. why didn't you just give the NT server a dial up modem and faxing software and let everyone share it.. problem solved..

I found a very nice minimalistic Windows proxy app at called Proksi (by a Russian prgrammer, I think). I installed it on a Win98 computer with a dial-up connection on a small network (192.168.x.x) and it was incredibly easy to set up so that the user at that station could add or delete users (even the NT server), and turn the proxy on or off at any time (system tray icon). Seems to have no problem with an HP print server, faxing, etc...

Don't know how it works on an NT server, though.

The other route is my favorite: get a cheap Linux or FreeBSD box, and run NAT. See thread619-41784

Now I re-read this and after looking around some, I shoudl mention that for 80 bucks or so you can get a canned version of Linix called "Storm" with a firewall option preconfigured. It's gotten high marks in the Linix world for cheap, easy and overall well behaved. It's not nearly as complex as checkpoint but hey.. for the price it works very well and provides your basic security/nat
