protocol monitoring software

Hi

I am looking some protocol monitoring software, something which I could download from the Internet and not too expensive.

My intention is to check the protocol used in our network, perhaps the bandwidth taken. Can someone help?

I also understand that in switching environment, we need to have port monitoring. I am using Cisco switches with IOS. So, how I can configure the port monitoring using IOS?

Not sure which sniffer you want to use, but I can help you out with the switch:

Lets say I plug my sniffer into port fa0/1 on the switch, and I want to monitor the traffic on port fa0/5 and fa0/6. These are the commands I would enter:

config t
interface FastEthernet0/1
port monitor FastEthernet0/5
port monitor FastEthernet0/6


That is it, pretty easy huh?
