My boss wanted a Unix based server to better protect our data files from the virus kiddies that have been hitting us. I now have a SuSE with Samba interface server to admin the windows files. All the workstations are to remain windows based. So,
I am surfing the net downloading from my favorite virus laden sites. I must have r-w priviledges to the server and any pet viruses on my workstation will have those same rights. Are the files on the Samba server safe, and, if not, how do I protect these? I know this is sketchy, but I am an absolute virgin when it comes to these operating systems. Please, be simplistic, for, like Sidhartha, I can learn even though I know nothing.

Virus infected files on a Samba share will not affect the Linux operating system but could spread to workstations that access the files.
So your server should remain safe but workstations are the problem.
Windows machines must have all the patch and antivirus updates installed.
You could install an antivirus program like McAfee on Linux or F-Prot (free) for on-access cleaning.
Or you could map the Samba drives onto a Windows server to run virus checks.
