protecting cells

I know excel has protection cabilities and maybe I'm not exploring that too well, but basically how do I say lock Column A so that noone can edit it at all, except me with a password. How would I do this for a specific range or one or more cells, thanks!
 
step 1
Unlock ALL cells
step 2
Lock those cells you want protecting
Step 3
Protect the spreadsheet

This will mean that users can change cells that are not locked but not those that are
