I have been asked to design a website for a local artist that wants to have an online art gallery. He is very concerned with his artwork being stolen from the site. I have advised him that there is no way to stop it 100%. Has anyone done a similar project and what are the best practices that may discourage someone from stealing his artwork?

put a big ugly caption over each image, the way does it.

while you can hinder some internet fools from right-clicking your images, you won't hinder me, or many people. but you already know that - you want to stop who you can.

do a search for mouseclick "disabling", you should find many resources.

As you've said, you cannot stop people from stealing images from websites.

You can stop people right-clicking, which will stop the opportune right-click-save-as "thief", but nothing will stop the old "Print Screen" trick.

He's far better off not worrying about it. If he really wants to, using a digital watermark ( might be the way to go - that way, any "stolen" images will easily be traceable... and some image editing programs (PSP, Photoshop, etc) will not let them be edited.

Hope this helps,
Dan

The answers you get are only as good as the information you give!

What does he think people will do with his art? What is it that he is worried about?
Seriously, any images on a website are not going to be anywhere near the resolution needed to produce a half decent print.

Why not take the fact that people will download the images and make it a positive? After all, if he slaps his name/web address on each image he may get some publicity and sales from it!

Thanks for the help. My advice will be for him to use a watermark if it will make him feel more comfortable. Anything else will not slow down anyone and may adversly affect his visitors experience.
