We have a school network using an NT4 server with NT4 workstations. One of the classrooms recently replaced a W/s with a Win2000 machine.

Since then, when an NT W/s logs on within that class profile, it receives the following message:

"Protected Storage
Protected storage uses your windows password to protect your personal data. Protected storage has detected data created with a previous version. To continue to use this data, enter your windows password below."

It seems that none of the network passwords used are accepted by the dialogue box, however if the cancel button is clicked it eventually goes away with out any ill affects.

This is more of a nuisance than anything as it is in the year 1 class group and any added complications to loging on are not needed by this age group.

Is there any way to make this go away as none of our passwords work.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help, Thank you

I think your old WinNT Wks profile has been overwritten by the new Win2k profile. Create a separate roaming user profile on the network share, and configure it to be used by the new Win2k user. When you start using roaming profile on Win2k created on Win2k, it shouldn't give any problems.

The error message gives an impression that its asking for a windows password. This password was required on Win95 and Win98 systems, when you logon, to create the separate user profiles on that machine. As far as I know there's no windows password on WinNT Wks or server.

The bottom line is, create separate roaming profiles for separate OSs. Then use those profiles on corresponding machines, i.e. WinNT Wks profile on WinNT Wks machine etc.

Hope it helps.
