Pros/Cons of using hostnames instead of top level domains

Tread42, it all depends on what the site is being used for...
If the site is used for a business purposes then the cons are:
1) It's not very professional
2) Looks cheap
3) Have pop-ups, or host ads on the site (very irritating)4) Do not have alot of special features like ASP, CGI, JSP, PHP, Coldfusion support with MSAccess, etc...
5) Can be unrealiable at times
6) Can't use an FTP software, must use their upload utility program

If the site is for personal reasons then the pros are:
1) Its cheap
2) Great way to learn about web designing, uploading, creating and maintaning of the site
Forget the Nobel Peace prize, I just want to take over the world!! [hammer]

Providing that widget.com is your domain and not some other freebie host (or even 'free' space from your isp) then nothing, otherwise all the above apply.

Sorry I didn't even realize that widget.com was a free host. What I meant to say are the pros and cons of say Proctor and Gamble using instead of tylenol.proctorandgamble.com.

So they create a new domain for most of their products instead of running them all off of hostnames. product1.proctorandgamble.com, product2.proctorandgamble.com and such. I was using widget just as a ficticous company :)

I should have made my post clearer. But I'm very interested in your thoughts on the above.

Under those circumstances I don't see why not. For a home page never for all the reasons GUJUm0deL but the biggest one looks VERY professional.

There is one thing and has nothing to do with the technology part of it people sometimes expect the product name to be the same as the site so say I saw a product called Osmium (I just like the sound of it) and that is the name on the box. I would just would want to type it in the browser and see it. If you put it under Osmium.company dot com. Less people may find it.

I thought you were using widget.com as an example.

as Gatorajc says, it's product positioning and marketing. Most of the film studios are doing the same thing.

If you are marketing splinge valves you would try to get rather than use splingevalves.valvesrus.com etc.
