Hi there:
We are in the proccess of setting up a new Linux server and am wondering if there would be any benefit of putting Win 98 on the machine as well. Someone had mentioned that this would automate timed shutdown and backups..although I'm sure you could accomplish that with just Linux. What are the pros and cons of this?

If your server will only be running Linux, then why waste the disk space to install Windows?

If linux is running, then there is nothing from Windows that will be used. If you are wanting to use this box as a workstation, then yes, set it up for dual-boot, otherwise, just install Linux.

Hi,

I don't see any advantage by having windows along with linux on servers. Dual boot is ok for workstation and not for servers.

And, for backups and scheduled/automated timed shutdown.. use crond. Configure lograted and schedule it through crond for regular backups.

regards,
Mahesh
