I have a linux system running Apache and Samba for a network of windows workstations... The XP systems regularly poll the Apache server with "PROPFIND /<samba share name>"...

It strikes me that they're looking for some service that might be available on a windows server, but not on my linux box... So, this is probably just a waste of network and server resources...

I have two questions. What are the XP systems trying to accomplish? How can I prevent this? Can I disable propfind in apache?

I'm pretty sure that what you're seeing is xp's UPNP feature trying to find shares to add to My Network Places.

Have a look at Read up on Universal Plug 'n Pray.

The system had UPnP off, but SSDP was on... We'll see if that fixes it.

I couldn't find anything on UPnP firing off PROPFIND requests...

Ah, nevermind, I see that WebDAV is related to UPnP, and WebDAV does do propfind... Thanks.
