Can Someone please explain the proper steps to selling an application. I've created a journal entry application, and want to sell it. I don't know really where to start. I would like to copyrite it. Also, do I need to get a business license? I am clueless to all of these things. Please help :)
Thank You!

Step one, send a copy to yourself via registered mail and don't open it. It's a poor mans way of getting a copyright. As to the licensing, you might want to check with an accountant. They may not know, but there cheaper than a lawyer. If you're selling over the internet, to the best of my knowledge, you don't need a sales tax number unless you sell to someone in your state, but the laws vary from state to state, so again, check with an accountant. They know more than I do.

Like Glen says (and I suggested earlier in the other forum) -- you need to start with a good CPA. One that has experience in working with startups.

He'll then be able to advise you on local laws, and be able to recommend a lawyer when needed.

Thanks for the replies. So I should burn it to a cd, then send it to myself via registered mail? How does this copyright it?

How much does copyrighting the real way cost? And what is the benifit?

Thanks! :)

btw, I am in the same situation as rmoyes02, just wondering..

I don't think sending itself to you copyrights it, I only think it gives you something to point to later if someone else claims that they wrote the app. I would print out the code, save the project on a cd, and burn the compiled app to cd as well and mail that.

It doesn't, that's just an urban legend. See thread717-823377

Hope This Helps!

Here is a good FAQ on copyright law:

Everybody is correct, sending a copy is just a way of protecting yourself. Copyright is totally different. Sorry for the confusion.

Dear all,
some basic rules selling stuff.
In most countries it helps being a company (Ltd protects you most) and setting this up can be done very cheaply and rightly stated through an accountant.

But let me put in a word of warning! Do not trust accountants!!!! (personall experience)

If there are any other (non third) parties involved make danm sure you have a contract with these people drawn up by your solicitor and ready everything before signing anything.

Do not feel ashamed or pressurized signing things, You are in control and you take your time!

Now when it comes to selling make SURE that you have some sort of licence agreement preferably drawn up (yet again) by a solicitor.

If you feel that this application is worth it than please cover yourself in all possible ways because people are nasty! I have seen too many of my friends getting ripped off and even their ideas stolen because they did not cover them selves.

Good luck
