How do I create a prompt in a query that allows the user to select the value from a list?

Build a user interface... a simple form that has the selection criterion and a go button to create the query. htwh,

If you are using Design View in the query, put a variable name in brackets on the criteria line below the field you want to select from.

i.e.
[Enter Start Date]

This will appear when the query is first started. In SQL after your WHERE

(tblname.fieldname)=[Enter Start Date]

[morning] needcoffee
